New Privacy Legislation

The recently introduced privacy legislation places additional requirements on psychologists in handling patient information and ensuring privacy and confidentiality. The Act covers the collection, use, disclosure, quality and security of personal information. It also gives patients the right to access and correct information. The requirements do not conflict with the standards of privacy that psychologists normally practice; the Act does require that psychologists document their privacy policy and make that policy available to the patient.

The Office of the Federal Privacy Commissioner has published

Guidelines on Privacy in the Private Health Sector.

This will assist you to develop a Privacy Policy.
