Why the ACCP?
-
The College is a non-profit organisation
committed to assisting students who intend to undertake a career in clinical
psychology. Any undergraduate psychology student is eligible for
student membership of the ACCP.
-
The College aims to provide a meeting
place and networking opportunities for psychologists as well as a body
able to represent clinical psychologists. It is run by practitioners
for practitioners and is a great means of establishing networks when you
need to find a supervisor or an internship.
-
The College provides a significant training
role to its members. The training is focussed on areas of psychology
relevant to the actual practice of psychology. Some examples of training
courses include; chronic pain management, personality disorders, hypnosis
and forensic psychology. Each Branch of the College organises local skills
training and Professional development courses for members. In addition,
the National Executive, located in Canberra has a library of training sessions
on videotape available on loan for a small fee.
-
The College has established a Faculty
tasked with designing and delivering a Clin Psy D. This course
is a professional doctorate rather than an academic degree and is aimed
at providing the successful applicant with effective skills and abilities
in the practice of psychology.
Membership
Any undergraduate psychology student
is eligible for student membership of the ACCP. While the benefits
of membership in a professional organisation such as the ACCP or the APS
are substantial, membership is not a requirement of legal registration
as a psychologist. All practising psychologists must be registered with
the relevant State or Territory Registration
Boards.
The College has Branches across
Australia and is creating more each year. In addition it has a Remote
Membership Scheme for those applicants who do not have a Branch nearby.
If you would like further information contact on your local branch please
contact your local branch president.
As a student of psychology, membership
of the College can provide you with a direct contact with psychological
practitioners and give you and input into issues affecting the practice
of psychology.
The college produces a bimonthly
Bulletin. It offers valuable insight into current issues and trends
amongst practitioners, as well as providing a forum for members.
Students who have completed their fourth year can use the Bulletin to advertise
free of charge when seeking internships or supervision.
The College also has an Email Forum
on the Internet for quick distribution of information and discussion of
practical issues involved in psychology, which is for the exclusive
use of members.
